Château Léoville Poyferré is a distinguished wine estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920. The estate produces elegant and powerful wines, primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Léoville Poyferré has gained particular acclaim in recent decades for its consistent quality and successful modernization efforts.
Saint-Julien is one of the smallest appellations in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France. It is situated between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south, spanning about 910 hectares of vineyards. Saint-Julien is known for producing some of the most consistent and high-quality wines in the Médoc, with a reputation for elegance and balance.
The estate's vineyards cover approximately 80 hectares, featuring the classic Médoc soil composition of gravelly outcrops over clay-limestone subsoils. This soil structure provides excellent drainage and heat retention, creating ideal conditions for growing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and reduces the risk of frost, further enhancing the terroir's suitability for producing complex, balanced wines with remarkable aging potential.
