This is a great vintage from Lafite. The profile is rich in feel, with a seriously firm tannic structure. Solid, complex and with great authority, this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine, is impressively dense in dark-fruit tones. It will age for many years. Drink from 2027, although that would almost be too soon.

Firm and powerful with blackberries, blueberries, currants and wet earth. Full-bodied, yet tight and angular with very pretty fruit and brightness. Really racy and super and set for a long, long life. Better after 2025.

The power in this vintage of Lafite is hidden, but it is there in spades and tiptoes up along the palate. Lovely brushed tannins are extremely well placed, discreetly holding the fruit. In many ways this is a truly classic Lafite because it is understated and lyrical. It's a wine that demands you know Lafite to see just how beautifully it will develop, says winemaker Eric Kohler. 40% of overall estate production. 100% new oak. Bottled early June 2017.

The Estate

Château Lafite Rothschild, a crown jewel of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank, holds the prestigious status of First Growth in the 1855 Classification. Though its viticultural roots trace back to 1620, the estate's legendary ascent truly began in 1868 when Baron Rothschild acquired the property. Over the centuries, Lafite Rothschild has become synonymous with exceptional Bordeaux wine, embodying the pinnacle of the region's winemaking tradition.

Deep Roots Combat Heat

Record-breaking heat waves challenged Pauillac, yet Lafite's ancient vines and deep clay-limestone plateau provided crucial resistance to the extreme conditions. The estate's position near the Gironde offered essential cooling influences during the intense summer. The wine displays remarkable restraint despite the vintage's power, showing classic cedar and cassis notes with the property's signature ethereal finish.

Gravel Plateau Drives Structure

The estate's deep gravel soils naturally regulated water stress through July's intense heat and August's sustained drought. Cool nights and maritime influences allowed steady ripening across Lafite's historic plateau, particularly beneficial for the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine captures the vintage's natural concentration through layers of blackcurrant and cedar, while the grand vin's signature ethereal structure and gravelly mineral core remain precisely defined.

Late season warmth and the estate's deep gravel soils proved crucial after a cool summer, particularly benefiting the château's historic plateau parcels. The property's proximity to the Gironde and precise harvest timing allowed optimal ripeness in the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine shows classic Pauillac restraint with cedar and blackcurrant notes, delivering Lafite's signature ethereal power and aristocratic refinement.

Nature's Perfect Balance

The beginning of winter was mild, dry and the beneficial cold weather did not arrived until the end of January, accompanied by rainfall. The budburst started at the beginning of April as usual and the vine then developed rapidly thanks to the water reserves and the temperate climate. In June, the flowering was early and homogeneous, a promising sign for the further development of grapes. The influence of the ocean and the estuary permitted to balance a hot summer with high temperatures. Water stress was high, but the rains of August brought the freshness necessary for the veraison and perfect maturation. The ideal conditions were reunited at harvest time, allowing the best of each plot to be obtained.

Gravels Shield First Growth

The château's prime position on Pauillac's plateau largely protected against April frost, particularly in the historic l'Enclos parcels. Summer brought measured warmth while maritime influences allowed steady ripening through early September. The wine shows Lafite's characteristic restraint and cedar-laced elegance, with pure Cabernet depth marking this challenging year.

The estate's old vines demonstrated particular resilience, their deep roots accessing water through drought stress. Layers of cassis and cedar merge with profound mineral depth, reflecting both the First Growth's precision and the vintage power.

When Expertise Conquers Nature
