Château Lafite Rothschild, a crown jewel of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank, holds the prestigious status of First Growth in the 1855 Classification. Though its viticultural roots trace back to 1620, the estate's legendary ascent truly began in 1868 when Baron Rothschild acquired the property. Over the centuries, Lafite Rothschild has become synonymous with exceptional Bordeaux wine, embodying the pinnacle of the region's winemaking tradition.
Pauillac, a jewel in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its exceptional red wines. This prestigious appellation boasts three of the five Bordeaux First Growths: Châteaux Lafite Rothschild, Latour, and Mouton Rothschild. Pauillac's terroir, defined by well-drained gravel soils, is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in local blends. The wines are characteristically full-bodied, tannic, and complex, offering flavors of black currant, cedar, and tobacco, with remarkable aging potential. Pauillac's unique microclimate, influenced by the nearby Gironde estuary, ensures consistent quality. The appellation's powerful, elegant, and long-lived wines have cemented its status as a paragon of Bordeaux reds, often commanding some of the highest prices in the world.
The Château's area is 112 hectares divided into three zones: the hills around the Château, the Carruades plateau contiguous to the west, and a 4.5 ha plot in the neighboring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The terroir consists of fine, deep gravel soils, mixed with windblown sands on a tertiary limestone subsoil, well-drained and well-exposed. Cabernet dominates here with 70% of the planting. Much of the work is done manually.
