Château Cantenac Brown, a distinguished Third Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, was founded in the early 19th century by John Lewis Brown, a Scottish wine merchant. Known for its striking Tudor-style château, the estate has evolved into one of Margaux’s most respected properties. Now under the ownership of the Le Lous family, Cantenac Brown continues to refine its winemaking approach, emphasizing both tradition and sustainability.
The Margaux appellation, located on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, is celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends that combine power with elegance. Benefiting from a temperate maritime climate, the region enjoys warm summers and mild winters, with the Gironde estuary playing a crucial role in moderating temperatures. Margaux’s reputation for producing some of the most refined and perfumed wines in Bordeaux has been established over centuries.
Château Cantenac Brown’s vineyards are planted on deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and retain warmth, aiding in the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon. Clay and limestone layers beneath the gravel contribute structure and finesse to the wines. The estate’s terroir, combined with precise vineyard management, results in wines with aromatic complexity, silky tannins, and remarkable aging potential.
