Clos Fourtet, a historic estate dating back to the 18th century, has long been a benchmark for fine Bordeaux wines. Originally known as "Camp Fourtet," the estate was a fortified site before its transformation into vineyards. Since then, Clos Fourtet has developed a reputation for producing elegant, age-worthy wines. Under the ownership of the Cuvelier family since 2001, the estate has embraced modern viticultural practices while honoring its deep-rooted traditions.
Clos Fourtet is located on the outskirts of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Bordeaux region. Saint-Émilion’s position on Bordeaux’s Right Bank makes it an ideal setting for Merlot-driven blends, with the area’s moderate maritime climate providing a harmonious balance between warmth and rainfall. The village’s cultural and historical significance adds an additional layer of prestige to the wines produced here.
The vineyards of Clos Fourtet sit atop Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau, a terroir known for its exceptional drainage and mineral-rich composition. The limestone bedrock is interspersed with clay and sandy soils, creating optimal conditions for Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These soils impart a distinctive minerality and finesse to the wines, while the plateau’s elevated position ensures consistent sun exposure and cooling breezes, fostering balance and complexity in every vintage.
