Located in Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus derives its name from the vineyard's location, where winemakers could hear the bells of the Mazerat chapel and the churches of Saint-Émilion and Saint-Martin simultaneously ringing the Angelus. Recognized worldwide as one of the flagship estates of the Saint-Émilion appellation, this domaine has been under the leadership of the de Boüard de Laforest family for eight generations. In 2012, Château Angélus joined the iconic Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone in the new classification, thus reaching the very exclusive elite of the Saint-Emilion appellation with the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.
Saint-Émilion, a prestigious wine-producing commune on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, is renowned for its Merlot and Cabernet Franc-based red wines. Located on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the region is characterized by its undulating landscape and diverse terroir, primarily composed of limestone plateaus and clay-rich soils. This unique geology, combined with a temperate maritime climate, provides ideal conditions for viticulture. Saint-Émilion wines are generally softer and more approachable than their Left Bank counterparts, offering a harmonious blend of fruit, structure, and elegance. The region's rich viticultural history and picturesque medieval town have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Saint-Émilion is also notable for its distinctive classification system, which is periodically revised to maintain high quality standards among its producers.
Chateau Angélus' distinctive terroir in Saint-Émilion is characterized by its location on the south-facing slopes of a natural amphitheater, with elevations ranging from 38 to 58 meters above sea level. The vineyard, spanning approximately 39 hectares, features a soil composition of limestone and clay with some sand, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. Planted primarily with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, along with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate maintains a high planting density of about 6,940 vines per hectare. The vines, averaging 38 years in age, benefit from a favorable microclimate with excellent sun exposure. This unique combination of factors contributes to the complexity and quality of Angélus wines, allowing for optimal grape ripening and a true expression of the estate's terroir in the final product.
