Along with the 2005, the 2009 is the greatest Angelus I've tasted and is a perfect wine in every way. Based on 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc raised in (I believe) 100% new oak, its still youthful ruby/purple color is followed by an incredible perfume of crème de cassis and blueberry fruits as well as notes of white chocolate, Asian spices, flowery incense, and a hint of white truffle. Full-bodied and powerful, it still stays weightless and elegant on the palate, and as all truly great wines do, it offers an amazing amount of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. It has a wealth of tannins, incredible depth of fruit, and a finish that won't quit. Drink this magical, heavenly 2009 any time over the coming 20-30 years or more.

Blended of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet colored 2009 Angélus sings of blackberry preserves, warm black cherries, stewed plums and dried herbs with hints of Chinese five spice, fragrant earth, truffles and new leather. Full, rich, spicy and decadent in the mouth, it has a plush, velvety texture and well-knit freshness, finishing very long with tons of spicy layers.

Intense chocolate and turmeric spices hit you right form the first moment. This is richly textured with a palate that is still almost primary fruit - an intense and impressive wine, with blackberry and black cherry fruits dominant, given balance and freshness by eucalyptus and mint leaf, helped no doubt by the Cabernet Franc that is such a signature of Angélus. Plenty of swagger here, vintage taking precedence over terroir at this stage of its life, and I would suggest giving it another few years in bottle before drinking. Harvest September 25th to October 14th.

The Estate

Located in Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus derives its name from the vineyard's location, where winemakers could hear the bells of the Mazerat chapel and the churches of Saint-Émilion and Saint-Martin simultaneously ringing the Angelus. Recognized worldwide as one of the flagship estates of the Saint-Émilion appellation, this domaine has been under the leadership of the de Boüard de Laforest family for eight generations. In 2012, Château Angélus joined the iconic Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone in the new classification, thus reaching the very exclusive elite of the Saint-Emilion appellation with the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

Heat Tests Clay Slopes

Historic summer heat challenged Saint-Émilion, yet the estate's clay-limestone slopes provided crucial water reserves during severe drought. Early August harvest preserved freshness, particularly in the amphitheater's old-vine parcels. The wine shows concentrated black fruits, dark spice, and mineral notes with remarkable power from this unprecedented vintage.

Perfection from Drought

The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux was near-perfect, with a warm, dry growing season that delivered small, concentrated berries of exceptional ripeness and balance. Château Angélus excelled in these conditions, crafting a wine of remarkable precision, richness, and longevity. Considered one of the greatest vintages of the 21st century, 2005 is a benchmark year for Bordeaux.

Slow-Ripened Sublimity

Early growth was followed by slow ripening due to August and early September weather, preserving freshness and aging potential. Healthy, perfectly ripe grapes allowed for meticulous harvesting. The resulting wines are dense with vibrant fruit aromas and subtle toasty notes, offering balance and elegant freshness.

Elegant, Accessible, Early-Drinking

The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux was cool and damp, requiring extensive vineyard work and strict grape selection. Château Angélus’ attention to detail resulted in a well-balanced, early-drinking wine with finesse. While not as powerful as other vintages, it shines for its elegance and accessibility.

Late-Harvest Luxury

Since the vines were clean and disease-free, harvesting began late on 3rd October. Picking could really be carried out depending solely on the ripeness of each plot and only on fine days. The deep black Merlot with the Cabernet Franc that traditionally does so well at Angelus, produced outstandingly dense wines with thick, richly supple, round body. The aromas are reminiscent of black berries and plum as well as delicate mineral and flowery notes. Long and fresh on the palate, their concentration is expressed as a silky elegance.

Deep-Garnet Perfection

These wines exhibit a deep, inky black color. Their nose reveals fresh, ripe fruit aromas that avoid any hint of jamminess. The bouquet is dominated by pure notes of red cherries, raspberries, and blackberries. On the palate they display lovely concentration with substance, but are in no way heavy. Their silky tannins balance perfectly with their supple richness. These wines are powerful and concentrated, but velvet smooth and subtle too.

Cool Nights Shape Balance

Perfect summer conditions and cool nights allowed for steady ripening across the estate's clay-limestone slopes and côtes. The old vines, particularly Cabernet Franc in the natural amphitheater, reached optimal maturity under clear autumn skies. The wine displays profound black fruits, graphite, and limestone notes with remarkable tension between power and freshness.

October Light Ripens

October sun proved crucial after an uneven summer in Saint-Émilion, while Angélus's amphitheater positioning maximized late-season ripening hours. The estate's limestone-clay soils regulated moisture through periods of drought and rain. The Cabernet Franc on limestone plateaus achieved full maturity, lending aromatic lift and precision to the final blend.
