The Estate

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château Haut-Brion, a Bordeaux First Growth. Introduced in 2007, it replaced Château Bahans Haut-Brion and is named after Clarence Dillon, who bought Haut-Brion in 1935. Typically containing more Merlot than the Grand Vin, Le Clarence is more approachable young while maintaining Haut-Brion's style. It's made from younger vines and plots not used for the first wine, but with the same exacting standards.

Early Harvest Preserves Balance

The estate's gravelly soils in Pessac-Léognan provided natural heat reflection during the warm growing season, particularly benefiting younger vines selected for the second wine. Early morning harvesting preserved crucial acidity while capturing optimal ripeness from the property's historic parcels. The wine shows the vintage's warmth through plush dark fruits while maintaining Haut-Brion's signature smoky mineral character and refined structure.

Early Heat Shapes Year

Early summer warmth challenged vines, but Haut-Brion's unique gravel-clay mix provided crucial balance through temperature spikes. The estate's protected amphitheater in Graves preserved freshness despite vintage difficulties. The wine displays classic smoke aromatics, refined red fruits, and the mineral tension that marks this historic terroir.

City Heat Tests Vines

The vintage's warmth was amplified by Haut-Brion's urban location, yet their deep gravel-clay soils provided perfect water regulation through summer heat. The historic estate's varied parcels allowed precise picking as temperatures peaked in their walled vineyards. Dark fruits, smoke, and crushed stones define this profound wine, displaying both power and the estate's signature restraint.

Urban Heat Aids Ripening

The urban location's heat island effect helped counter the cool, wet growing season, while the estate's deep clay-gravel soils provided essential drainage. The property's unique combination of early-ripening terroir and protected position proved crucial during the challenging autumn. The wine, partially aged in amphora, shows remarkable aromatic complexity with violet notes and the estate's distinctive spice character.
