Château Trotte Vieille, one of Saint-Émilion’s oldest estates, has a history steeped in legend. Its name is said to derive from an old woman (“trotte vieille”) who would eagerly trot out to greet visitors. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion classification, the estate is celebrated for its refined wines and dedication to traditional Bordeaux winemaking.
The Saint-Émilion appellation, located on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, is renowned for its Merlot-dominant blends, offering wines with richness and elegance. The region’s varied topography includes limestone plateaus, clay slopes, and gravelly terraces, creating diverse expressions of terroir. Saint-Émilion’s long history of viticulture has earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Château Trotte Vieille’s vineyards are planted on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, which provides excellent drainage and contributes to the wines’ vibrant minerality. The soils also include clay, ideal for retaining water and nurturing the Merlot vines, as well as gravel patches that benefit the Cabernet Franc. The combination of terroir, old vines, and careful viticulture results in wines of elegance, structure, and long aging potential.
