Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé stands out even among Burgundy's historic estates, tracing its roots back over 550 years to 1450 when Jean Moisson cultivated vines in Chambolle. Now in its 20th generation of family ownership, the domain is led by Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé. Widely regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle-Musigny, it owns 7.25 hectares of the grand cru Musigny vineyard, representing 70% of this revered site. With additional holdings in Bonnes-Mares and Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, the domaine produces some of Burgundy's most sought-after and age-worthy Pinot Noirs, maintaining its position as a benchmark producer through a steadfast commitment to quality and tradition.
The domaine is located in Chambolle-Musigny, a small village in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. Chambolle-Musigny is renowned for producing some of the most elegant and perfumed Pinot Noirs in the world. The Côte de Nuits, forming the northern half of the Côte d'Or, is home to many of Burgundy's most famous red wine appellations. This area is characterized by a patchwork of small vineyards, each with its unique terroir and classification within the region's complex hierarchy.
The terroir of Chambolle-Musigny is distinguished by its limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay and rocky scree. These well-draining soils, combined with optimal sun exposure on the gentle slopes, create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. The area's cool continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters, allows for slow ripening of the grapes. This unique combination of soil, topography, and climate contributes to the production of wines known for their finesse, aromatic complexity, and silky textures, characteristics that have made Chambolle-Musigny and Domaine de Vogüé famous among Burgundy enthusiasts.
