Louis Roederer, founded in 1776, is one of Champagne's most prestigious and innovative houses. Located in Reims, it remains family-owned and is currently managed by Frédéric Rouzaud, representing the seventh generation. Roederer owns 240 hectares of vineyards in the finest Crus of Champagne, supplying 70% of their grape needs - an exceptionally high proportion for a Champagne house. The estate is renowned for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, with a significant portion of its vineyards farmed biodynamically, and for producing the famous prestige cuvée Cristal.
Roederer's vineyards are strategically located across Champagne's best terroirs, including the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs. The Champagne region, situated about 150 kilometers east of Paris, is France's northernmost wine region, known for its cool climate and chalky soils. It encompasses five main growing areas: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Aube. Each of these sub-regions contributes unique characteristics to the grapes, allowing Roederer to create complex and balanced champagnes that reflect the diversity of Champagne's terroir.
The terroir of Champagne is characterized by its unique chalk subsoil, which provides excellent drainage and heat retention - Crucial factors in the region's cool climate. This chalky base is often overlaid with varying amounts of clay, sand, and limestone, creating a diverse range of soil compositions. The area's gently rolling hills, ranging from 90 to 300 meters in elevation, offer varied exposures that influence grape ripening. Champagne's semi-continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers, combined with its northerly latitude, results in a long, slow ripening period. This unique combination of soil and climate produces grapes with high acidity and subtle flavors, essential for creating Roederer's refined and complex champagnes, particularly their flagship Cristal.
