Gaja, founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, is a prestigious winery located in Barbaresco, Piedmont. The estate began with just two hectares and has expanded over generations, with Angelo Gaja introducing single-vineyard Barbarescos, including Sorì San Lorenzo in 1967.
The Sorì San Lorenzo vineyard, situated just south of the village of Barbaresco within the Secondine cru, was acquired by the Gaja family in 1964. The term "Sorì" refers to a hillside with southern exposure, ideal for ripening Nebbiolo grapes, while "San Lorenzo" honors the patron saint of Alba's cathedral.
The vineyard's unique terroir, characterized by its southern exposure and favorable microclimate, contributes to the wine's rich and complex structure, with notes of dark fruit, licorice, and spices. Traditionally, Sorì San Lorenzo was made from 95% Nebbiolo and 5% Barbera, but since the 2013 vintage, it has been produced exclusively from Nebbiolo, reinstating its Barbaresco DOCG classification.
