Château Rieussec, established in the 18th century, was originally owned by the Carmelite monks of Langon. Following the French Revolution, it changed hands multiple times before being acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. Recognized as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, the estate has consistently produced esteemed Sauternes wines.
Located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, Château Rieussec spans approximately 85 hectares across the communes of Sauternes and Fargues, adjacent to Château d’Yquem. The region's climate, influenced by the confluence of the Ciron and Garonne rivers, creates misty autumn mornings ideal for the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, essential for crafting sweet wines.
The vineyards are predominantly planted with Sémillon (81%), complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (17%) and Muscadelle (2%). The soil composition of sandy gravel atop clay provides excellent drainage, fostering optimal conditions for vine health and grape maturation. Traditional viticultural practices, including meticulous hand-harvesting in multiple passes, ensure that only the finest botrytized grapes contribute to the estate's complex and age-worthy wines.
