Founded in the 12th century by Benedictine monks from the Vertheuil Abbey, Château Prieuré-Lichine, originally known as Prieuré de Cantenac, has a rich history intertwined with the ecclesiastical and viticultural heritage of the Margaux appellation. The estate remained under monastic ownership until the French Revolution, after which it underwent several ownership changes. In 1951, renowned wine author and merchant Alexis Lichine acquired the property, initiating significant renovations and expanding the vineyard holdings. His efforts culminated in the estate being renamed Château Prieuré-Lichine in 1953, honoring both its monastic origins and his own contributions.
Situated in the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Château Prieuré-Lichine's vineyards are dispersed across five communes: Cantenac, Margaux, Soussans, Arsac, and Labarde. This geographical diversity exposes the vines to the temperate maritime climate of the region, characterized by mild winters and warm summers, with the nearby Gironde estuary providing a moderating influence. The varied locations of the vineyard plots allow for a complex expression of Margaux's terroir, contributing to the estate's distinctive wine profile.
The estate's 77.5 hectares of vineyards are planted on a mosaic of gravelly soils, typical of the Médoc region. These well-draining soils are ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the primary grape varieties of the estate. The combination of diverse soil types and meticulous vineyard management enables Château Prieuré-Lichine to produce wines that embody the elegance and finesse characteristic of the Margaux appellation.
