Château Sociando-Mallet's history dates back to 1633, when records mention its ownership by a Basque nobleman named Sieur Sociando. In 1831, following the marriage of Marie-Elisabeth Alaret to naval officer Achille Mallet, the estate adopted the combined name Sociando-Mallet. By the late 1960s, the property had fallen into disrepair until Jean Gautreau, a wine merchant, acquired it in 1969. Recognizing its potential, Gautreau revitalized the estate, expanding the vineyards and modernizing the facilities, thereby restoring its reputation in the Haut-Médoc region.
Situated in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, approximately ten kilometers north of Pauillac, Château Sociando-Mallet overlooks the Gironde Estuary. This location benefits from a temperate maritime climate, with the estuary providing a moderating effect that reduces temperature extremes. The region's deep gravel soils, characteristic of the Médoc, are particularly suited for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, contributing to the distinctive profiles of the wines produced here.
The estate's 83-hectare vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot (55%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), along with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc (5%). The terroir consists of Günz gravel atop a deep clay-limestone subsoil, which facilitates excellent drainage and optimal ripening conditions for the vines. This unique combination imparts complexity, freshness, and elegance to the wines, embodying the essence of the Haut-Médoc appellation.
