Domaine Michel Lafarge, established in the early 19th century, is a venerable estate located in Volnay, within Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. The Lafarge family has been deeply rooted in this region for generations, with Michel Lafarge's father acquiring the iconic Clos du Château des Ducs Monopole in 1900. Michel Lafarge, a legendary figure in Burgundy, managed the domaine for over six decades until his passing in January 2020. Today, his son Frédéric, daughter-in-law Chantal, and granddaughter Clothilde continue the family's winemaking legacy, producing some of the greatest traditional Volnays.
The estate oversees approximately 12 hectares of vineyards, primarily in Volnay and Beaune, including a 0.9-hectare holding in the esteemed Clos des Chênes and several top Premier Cru vineyards in the appellation. The vineyards are cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, relying instead on natural preparations to enhance soil vitality and vine health. This approach allows the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines to express the unique characteristics of the region's terroir.
In the cellar, the Lafarge family employs traditional vinification methods, including 100% destemming of grapes and restrained use of new oak (around 15% for the top cuvées). This approach highlights the purity of the fruit, resulting in wines that are exceptionally focused, energetic, and expressive of their terroir. The wines are handled minimally, with only a couple of rackings, a light fining, and rarely any filtration, ensuring that each bottle authentically represents the vineyard's character.
