The Mazzei family has been producing wine since 1435, making it one of the oldest winemaking dynasties in Tuscany. Based in Castello di Fonterutoli near Chianti, the estate has been a cornerstone of Tuscan viticulture for over six centuries. The family is celebrated for their role in elevating the prestige of Chianti Classico and their innovative approach to balancing tradition with modern winemaking techniques.
The Mazzei estate is situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, between Florence and Siena. This historic area is known for its undulating hills, olive groves, and dense forests. The Mediterranean climate, with warm, sunny days and cool nights, is ideal for cultivating Sangiovese, the signature grape of the region.
The terroir at Castello di Fonterutoli is characterized by its galestro and alberese soils, a combination of marl and limestone that promotes excellent drainage and imparts minerality to the wines. The estate’s vineyards span diverse elevations and microclimates, allowing for complex and nuanced expressions of Sangiovese, as well as other varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
