Château d'Armailhac, formerly known as Mouton d’Armailhacq, has a storied history dating back to 1750. Located in the heart of Pauillac, it became part of the Rothschild family’s portfolio in 1933, under Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Over the years, the estate has undergone numerous renovations and replantings to enhance the quality of its wines. Today, Château d'Armailhac is celebrated for producing elegant and refined expressions of Pauillac that reflect both its heritage and its innovative winemaking philosophy.
Pauillac, located in the northern Médoc of Bordeaux, is one of the most prestigious wine-producing communes in the world. Known for its gravelly soils and proximity to the Gironde estuary, Pauillac is home to three of Bordeaux’s First Growths. The region’s moderate maritime climate, influenced by the estuary, creates ideal growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in the well-drained soils and warm summers.
The vineyards of Château d'Armailhac are situated on gently sloping gravel terraces, providing excellent drainage and heat retention, which are crucial for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. The subsoils, composed of clay and limestone, offer structure and depth to the wines. With a mix of classic Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, the terroir produces wines that are rich, structured, and distinguished by notes of cassis, tobacco, and earthy minerality.
