Château d'Issan's history dates back to the 12th century, originally known as La Mothe-Cantenac. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands through inheritance and marriage, each owner contributing to its legacy. In 1945, the Cruse family acquired the property, undertaking significant restorations to both the château and its vineyards.
Located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, Château d'Issan benefits from the region's temperate maritime climate, influenced by its proximity to the Gironde estuary. This environment fosters the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the primary grape varieties in Margaux. The region is celebrated for producing wines with elegance and aromatic complexity.
The estate's vineyards are situated on deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention, aiding in the ripening of grapes. This terroir imparts finesse and structure to the wines, exemplifying the quintessential qualities of Margaux.
