Château Léoville Las Cases is a renowned wine estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it is often regarded as performing at a First Growth level. The estate has a rich history dating back to the 17th century and has been owned by the Delon family since the early 20th century. Léoville Las Cases is known for producing powerful, long-lived wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Saint-Julien is one of the smallest appellations in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France. It is situated between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south, spanning about 910 hectares of vineyards. Saint-Julien is known for producing some of the most consistent and high-quality wines in the Médoc, with a reputation for elegance and balance.
The estate's 97 hectares of vineyards are situated in the northernmost part of Saint-Julien, bordering the prestigious Pauillac appellation and neighboring Château Latour. The vineyards feature a classic Médoc soil composition of deep gravel beds over clay subsoil, providing excellent drainage and heat retention. This terroir, combined with the estate's proximity to the Gironde estuary, creates a unique microclimate that allows for optimal ripening of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. These factors contribute to the wine's signature power, structure, and remarkable aging potential.
