Château Pavie is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France. It was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in the 2012 classification of Saint-Émilion wines, joining the ranks of the region's most elite producers. Owned by Gérard Perse since 1998, Pavie has undergone significant renovations and improvements, both in the vineyard and the winery. The estate is known for producing powerful, concentrated wines primarily from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pavie's wines are notable for their richness, complexity, and long aging potential.
Saint-Émilion, a prestigious wine-producing commune on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, is renowned for its Merlot and Cabernet Franc-based red wines. Located on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the region is characterized by its undulating landscape and diverse terroir, primarily composed of limestone plateaus and clay-rich soils. This unique geology, combined with a temperate maritime climate, provides ideal conditions for viticulture. Saint-Émilion wines are generally softer and more approachable than their Left Bank counterparts, offering a harmonious blend of fruit, structure, and elegance. The region's rich viticultural history and picturesque medieval town have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Saint-Émilion is also notable for its distinctive classification system, which is periodically revised to maintain high-quality standards among its producers.
The estate's vineyards cover approximately 37 hectares on the limestone plateau east of the town of Saint-Émilion. This elevated position features a unique soil composition of limestone and clay-limestone, with some areas of blue clay. The limestone soils provide excellent drainage and impart a distinctive minerality to the wines. The vineyard's south-facing slope ensures optimal sun exposure, allowing for full ripening of the grapes. This combination of factors, along with meticulous vineyard management and low yields, contributes to the production of grapes with intense concentration and complexity, resulting in wines that are known for their power, depth, and ability to express the unique character of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau.
