Bollinger, founded in 1829, is one of Champagne's most prestigious and respected houses. Located in the village of Aÿ, this family-owned business is now led by Charles-Armand de Belenet, continuing a legacy of excellence spanning nearly two centuries. Bollinger owns 178 hectares of vineyards, predominantly in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages, which supply over 60% of their grape needs - an unusually high proportion for a Champagne house. The estate is renowned for its distinctive style, characterized by the predominant use of Pinot Noir and the practice of aging wines in oak barrels.
Bollinger's vineyards are primarily situated in the Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs, two of Champagne's most important sub-regions. The Champagne region, located about 150 kilometers east of Paris, is France's northernmost wine region, known for its cool climate and chalky soils. It encompasses five main growing areas: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Aube. Each of these areas contributes unique characteristics to the grapes grown there, influencing the final blend of the champagnes.
The terroir of Champagne is distinguished by its unique soil composition, predominantly chalk with layers of belemnite fossils, clay, and sand. This chalky subsoil provides excellent drainage and heat retention, Crucial for grape ripening in the region's cool climate. The area's rolling hills, ranging from 90 to 300 meters in elevation, offer varied exposures that influence grape ripening. Champagne's semi-continental climate, characterized by cold winters and warm summers, coupled with its northerly latitude, results in a long, slow ripening period that helps develop complex flavors while maintaining high acidity - key factors in Bollinger's rich, full-bodied style of champagne.
