Château d'Yquem is the most renowned estate in Sauternes, holding the prestigious Premier Cru Supérieur classification. This iconic château, with its rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, is celebrated for producing what many consider the world's finest sweet wines. The estate covers 113 hectares, with about 100 hectares under vine, primarily planted with Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sauternes is a renowned wine region in Bordeaux, France, famous for its exquisite sweet white wines. The area's unique microclimate, created by the confluence of the Garonne and Ciron rivers, fosters the development of noble rot (botrytis cinerea) on the grapes, concentrating their sugars and flavors. Sauternes wines are primarily made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes, with Sémillon typically dominating the blend. The resulting wines are known for their complex flavors of honey, apricot, and vanilla, balanced by refreshing acidity, and have the potential to age for decades.
The terroir of Château d'Yquem is exceptional, characterized by gravelly, clay-based soils on limestone bedrock. The estate's elevated position on a hill in Sauternes provides excellent drainage and exposure. This unique microclimate, influenced by the convergence of the warm Garonne River and the cooler Ciron River, creates the perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea (noble rot), essential for the production of these luscious, concentrated sweet wines.
