An elegant Bordeaux blend triumph from a challenging vintage. Despite early growth, late frosts, and summer drought, timely June rains and ideal ripening conditions salvaged the year, producing high-quality fruit with remarkable freshness. This potentially exceptional vintage offers vibrant red fruit notes, subtle oak influences, and Haut-Brion's signature minerality. Medium-bodied, it boasts silky tannins and fresh acidity. While approachable in its youth, this wine promises excellent aging potential

Château Haut-Brion

Estate

The vineyard of Château Haut-Brion is part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, located north of the Graves wine region in Bordeaux. Haut-Brion's terroir, formed by two significant ridges of Günzian gravel, rises 12 to 15 meters above the nearby watercourses. These gravelly soils consist of small stones, composed of various quartz varieties: true gems of Château Haut-Brion's terroir. Château Haut-Brion was established and structured as early as 1525, making it the oldest vineyard in Bordeaux.

1996

Resilience

The climate of 1996 was mostly characterized by its great irregularity. Except for a few days in July, there were no long hot periods. It began to rain rather late in August. The first half of September was temperate but it rained consistently during the second half. Altogether the summer was average with a few nice intervals.

2017

Aromatic Brilliance

The 2017 vintage began with early vegetative growth, accelerated by a warm spring despite late April frosts. A significant water deficit in summer was offset by June rainfall, preventing drought stress. Above-average sunshine and hot days balanced by cool nights created ideal ripening conditions. September brought favorable harvest weather, interrupted briefly by rain that benefited Cabernet ripening. The resulting wines showcase outstanding fruit quality and crucial freshness, positioning 2017 as a potentially benchmark vintage.
