Cinquième Grand Cru (Fifth Growth)

Château Pontet Canet

Estate

Château Pontet-Canet, adjacent to Mouton-Rothschild, has undergone a remarkable transformation under owner Alfred Tesseron and manager Jean-Michel Comme. Its exceptional terroir and bold shift to biodynamic viticulture have propelled it to become one of the most sought-after brands in the Médoc. The wines, traditionally known for their deep ruby color, jammy black fruits, cedar notes, and powerful yet balanced character, have evolved to showcase increasing purity due to biodynamic practices. As a Fifth Growth Classified of Pauillac, Pontet-Canet exemplifies the potential for innovation and quality improvement within the established Bordeaux classification system, producing muscular yet harmonious wines that contribute to Bordeaux's legendary status.

1996

Remarkably Irregular Vintage

The climate of 1996 was mostly characterized by its great irregularity. Except for a few days in July, there were no long hot periods. It began to rain rather late in August. The first half of September was temperate but it rained consistently during the second half. Altogether the summer was average with a few nice intervals.

2015

Biodynamic Beauty in a Stellar Vintage

Chateau Pontet-Canet's 2015 offering is a brilliant expression of a warm, dry vintage and the estate's biodynamic practices. The growing season began with a mild spring, followed by a hot, dry summer that accelerated ripening and concentrated flavors in the grapes. Timely rains in August refreshed the vines, while a perfect Indian summer allowed for harvesting at optimal maturity. The resulting wine combines the richness of the vintage with Pontet-Canet's signature purity and energy, showcasing the benefits of their holistic approach to viticulture.

2019

Heatwave Hero

The 2019 vintage from Chateau Pontet-Canet highlights the estate's mastery in adapting to increasingly warm growing seasons while maintaining their biodynamic principles. A mild spring led to even flowering, but June brought a heatwave that required precise vineyard management to prevent sun damage. Timely rains in July and August refreshed the vines, while a dry, warm September allowed for optimal ripening. The result is a wine of remarkable balance and freshness, combining the ripeness of a warm year with the intense, pure fruit character that has become Pontet-Canet's hallmark.

2021

Triumph of Terroir and Tenacity

Chateau Pontet-Canet's 2021 vintage demonstrates the estate's resilience and commitment to biodynamic viticulture in one of the most challenging growing seasons in recent memory. Severe spring frost in April significantly reduced yields, followed by an unusually cool and wet summer that increased disease pressure in the vineyards. The team's meticulous work, including extensive green harvesting and sorting, was crucial in ensuring quality, with their biodynamic practices proving particularly valuable in this difficult year. Despite these challenges, Pontet-Canet produced a wine of surprising finesse and aromatic complexity, reflecting both the unique character of this testing vintage and the estate's unwavering dedication to expressing its terroir.
