Château Rayas is a legendary estate located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of France's Southern Rhône Valley. Founded in the late 19th century by Albert Reynaud, the estate gained international acclaim under the stewardship of Jacques Reynaud, who took over in 1978. Today, Château Rayas is run by Jacques' nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud, who continues the family's tradition of producing some of the most sought-after wines in the region. The estate is renowned for its unique approach to winemaking and its exceptional, atypical Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most famous wine appellations in the Southern Rhône, known for its powerful, full-bodied red wines. The region is characterized by its Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows for the use of up to 13 grape varieties, but most producers focus on Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. Château Rayas stands out in this context, as it produces its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape exclusively from Grenache, bucking the regional trend of blending.
The terroir of Château Rayas is unique within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, contributing significantly to the distinctive character of its wines. Unlike much of the appellation, which is known for its famous galets roulés (large, rounded pebbles), Rayas' vineyards are composed primarily of fine sand over a clay subsoil. This sandy soil, combined with the estate's location in a cooler, forested area of the appellation, results in wines that are remarkably elegant and perfumed, contrasting with the more robust style typical of the region. The estate practices organic farming and maintains old vines, further enhancing the complexity and depth of their wines.
