A very Clos des Papes vintage,' says Vincent Avril, and I know what he means - a vintage that naturally delivers the kind of fresh, elegant wines that this estate is famous for. A tasting of several foudres point to a wine with natural, easy balance. The Mourvèdre is excellent here this year, and adds great depth to the fresh and delightful Grenache that has notes of black tea, black cherry and iron. Elegant and very fine.

Beguiling, with a plume of black tea and incense leading off, followed by black cherry reduction, cassis, melted black licorice, warm earth, singed tobacco and garrigue accents. Offers breadth and depth with a seamless feel, capped by a subtle mineral edge that lingers lengthily amid the beautiful fruit. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2040. 8,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.

I last reported on the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape prior to bottling, so let me update readers here. It's a terrific, red-fruited version of Clos des Papes, with raspberry and cherry notes accented by hints of black olive and allspice. Full-bodied, taut and firmly structured, with a long, concentrated finish, this is a vintage that should reward cellaring.

Robert Parker
The Estate

Clos des Papes is a historic estate located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, established in 1896 by Paul Avril and now considered one of the appellation's most prestigious producers. The estate has remained in family hands for several generations, with Paul Vincent Avril currently at the helm, having taken over from his father Paul in 1988. The domaine's dedication to traditional methods, exceptionally low yields, and meticulous grape selection has earned it a reputation for producing some of the region's most profound and age-worthy wines. Unlike many producers in the region, Clos des Papes produces just two wines each year - their renowned red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape - focusing all their expertise on these flagship cuvées.

Solar Perfection at Clos Papes

At Clos des Papes, the 2020 season brought early budbreak followed by a hot, dry summer that particularly favored their old Grenache vines spread across the appellation's finest terroirs. The estate's traditional approach of late harvesting and co-fermentation of varieties proved especially beneficial in this solar vintage, allowing full phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness. The combination of heat and the cooling influence of the Mistral wind created perfect conditions for their biodynamically-farmed vineyards, resulting in one of their most complete wines in recent memory.

Clos des Papes' Elegant Resilience

The 2021 growing season at Clos des Papes was marked by significant challenges, including spring frosts, a cool summer, and rain during harvest. The estate's old vines and meticulous vineyard management were crucial in navigating these difficulties. Through careful selection and Vincent Avril's skilled winemaking, Clos des Papes produced a wine that beautifully captures the freshness and aromatic complexity of this cooler vintage.
