Clos des Papes is a prestigious estate located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in France's Southern Rhône Valley. The domaine has been in the Avril family since 1896, with Paul Avril establishing its reputation in the mid-20th century. Today, it is run by Paul-Vincent Avril, who took over from his father in 1988. Clos des Papes is renowned for its traditional winemaking approach and its commitment to producing high-quality, age-worthy wines that exemplify the best of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate produces only two wines each year: a red and a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where Clos des Papes is situated, is one of the most famous appellations in the Southern Rhône. The region is known for its powerful, full-bodied red wines, typically blended from up to 13 permitted grape varieties. Grenache is usually the dominant variety, often complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre. The climate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The fierce Mistral wind, which can blow for up to 100 days a year, plays a Crucial role in keeping the vines dry and free from disease.
The terroir of Clos des Papes is particularly diverse, which contributes significantly to the complexity of their wines. The estate owns 35 hectares of vineyards spread across 24 different parcels throughout the appellation. This patchwork of vineyards encompasses a variety of soil types, including the famous galets roulés (large, rounded pebbles), sand, clay, and limestone. The galets roulés, in particular, are a hallmark of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir, helping to retain heat during the day and radiate it back to the vines at night, promoting even ripening. Clos des Papes takes full advantage of this diverse terroir by blending grapes from all their parcels, creating wines that showcase the full spectrum of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's terroir expression.
