This wine is a lovely, textbook example of Amoureuses, with fragrant red and black berry fruit, rose petal floral notes, and a bit of spice. The texture is plump and approachable without the reserve of the Bonnes-Mares. It has supple tannins, balanced acidity, and a luxuriously long finish. Production is extremely limited since Lupatelli has convinced the owners to replant one-third of the vineyard. The winemaking is also being renewed and is now done in small vats keyed to the size of the holding. The attention to detail is evident in this wine.

Wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, roses, exotic spices and plums, the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and perfumed, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, aromatic finish. The vines here are infected with leaf roll virus and produced only two barrels from over half a hectare, a derisory yield.

The Estate

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé stands out even among Burgundy's historic estates, tracing its roots back over 550 years to 1450 when Jean Moisson cultivated vines in Chambolle. Now in its 20th generation of family ownership, the domain is led by Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé. Widely regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle-Musigny, it owns 7.25 hectares of the grand Cru Musigny vineyard, representing 70% of this revered site. With additional holdings in Bonnes-Mares and Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, the domaine produces some of Burgundy's most sought-after and age-worthy Pinot Noirs, maintaining its position as a benchmark producer through a steadfast commitment to quality and tradition.

Les Amoureuses' Elegant Resilience

The 2021 growing season in Chambolle-Musigny challenged Domaine Comte de Vogüé with spring frosts that significantly reduced yields, followed by a cool, damp summer. However, the estate's meticulous viticulture and the excellent drainage of the Les Amoureuses vineyard helped mitigate these difficulties. A late-season period of fine weather allowed for crucial final ripening, resulting in a wine of surprising depth and aromatic complexity that beautifully showcases the delicacy and mineral tension characteristic of this exceptional terroir.
