Domaine Jamet is a highly respected estate located in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, specifically in the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The domaine was founded by Joseph Jamet in 1950 and gained international recognition under the stewardship of his son, Jean-Paul Jamet, who took over in 1991. Today, the estate is run by Jean-Paul and his son, Loïc, who joined the family business in 2013. Domaine Jamet is renowned for producing some of the finest examples of Côte-Rôtie, known for their elegance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully.
Côte-Rôtie, meaning "roasted slope," is a prestigious appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley. Unlike the Southern Rhône, which is known for its blends, Côte-Rôtie focuses almost exclusively on Syrah, sometimes with a small addition of Viognier. The region is characterized by its steep, south-facing slopes that maximize sun exposure in this relatively cool climate. Côte-Rôtie is divided into two main sectors: the Côte Brune, known for its iron-rich soils and more tannic wines, and the Côte Blonde, with lighter soils producing more aromatic and delicate wines.
The terroir of Domaine Jamet's vineyards plays a Crucial role in the distinctive character of their wines. The estate owns approximately 7 hectares of vines spread across 27 different parcels throughout Côte-Rôtie, including plots in both the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde. This diversity of sites, each with its unique soil composition and microclimate, allows the Jamets to create complex, layered wines that express the full range of Côte-Rôtie terroir. The steep, terraced vineyards are composed of schist and granite soils, which contribute to the wines' minerality and structure. Domaine Jamet is known for its traditional approach, including whole-cluster fermentation and aging in large oak barrels, which further enhances the expression of their exceptional terroir in the final wines.
