The 2021 Méo-Camuzet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru exemplifies the classical elegance achievable in this challenging vintage. This refined wine offers a precise bouquet of red cherries, wild raspberries, and subtle forest floor notes, complemented by delicate spice and violet aromas. The palate displays remarkable finesse and transparency, with fine-grained tannins and a crystalline mineral structure that perfectly reflects both the vintage's character and the grandeur of this historic terroir.

This wine is surprisingly accessible, with a charming, bright pomegranate and ripe cherry fruit, and rose petal, pepper and mineral notes. The texture is silky and fresh – it lacks the imposing density of some years (like 2020), but it is beautiful nonetheless. Méo has 2.75 hectares, second only to Château de la Tour, and the parcels are very well placed in La Garenne (which he calls Pres du Château), Les Chioures, and Grand Maupertuis. The 2021 vintage is a blend of all of the parcels.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is more structured, unwinding in the glass with aromas of smoky berries, sweet spices, plums and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with powdery tannins that assert themselves on the saline finish, it's one 2021 that will reward a bit of patience.

The Estate

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, founded in the early 20th century, is one of Burgundy's most prestigious estates. Located in Vosne-Romanée, the domaine manages about 14 hectares of vineyards, including holdings in several grand cru sites such as Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, and Échezeaux. Under the leadership of Jean-Nicolas Méo since the 1980s, the estate has risen to prominence, known for producing wines of exceptional quality and finesse. Méo-Camuzet's history is notable for its connection to Henri Jayer, a legendary Burgundian winemaker who served as a consultant and mentor to the domaine.

Classical Grandeur Prevails

In Méo-Camuzet's parcels of Clos Vougeot, the 2021 season began dramatically with devastating April frosts that significantly reduced yields, followed by a cool, wet summer that demanded exceptional vineyard management. The estate's experienced team responded with meticulous canopy work and strict sorting, while their well-positioned vines in the mid and upper sections of the Clos helped achieve optimal ripeness despite the challenging conditions. The result captures the classical proportions and transparency of cooler vintages, albeit with more modest concentration than recent warm years.
