Champagne Jacques Selosse is a renowned estate located in the village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs region of Champagne, France. Founded in the 1950s by Jacques Selosse, the estate is now run by his son, Anselme Selosse, who took over in 1980. Anselme is widely regarded as a pioneer in the Champagne region, known for his innovative approaches to viticulture and winemaking. The estate owns approximately 7.5 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Chardonnay grapes.
Selosse's vineyards are situated in the Côte des Blancs, a subregion of Champagne famous for its exceptional Chardonnay grapes. This area is characterized by its chalky soils, which contribute to the distinctive minerality found in the wines produced here. The Côte des Blancs runs south of Épernay and includes several Grand Cru villages, including Avize, where Selosse is based. This region is particularly prized for producing some of the finest blanc de blancs Champagnes.
The terroir of Selosse's vineyards plays a crucial role in the unique character of their wines. The chalky subsoil of the Côte des Blancs provides excellent drainage and imparts a distinct mineral quality to the grapes. Anselme Selosse is known for his meticulous approach to expressing terroir, often vinifying and bottling wines from individual parcels to showcase the subtle differences in soil composition and microclimate. This attention to terroir, combined with Selosse's low-intervention winemaking philosophy, results in Champagnes that are known for their complexity, depth, and ability to express their place of origin.
