Veuve Clicquot was established in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot and rose to prominence under the leadership of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, known as the “Veuve” (widow) Clicquot. Widely credited with pioneering modern Champagne production, including the invention of the riddling rack, Madame Clicquot revolutionized the industry. Today, Veuve Clicquot is celebrated globally for its rich history and signature style of Champagne.
Based in Reims, Veuve Clicquot is located in the heart of the Champagne region in northern France. The region’s cool continental climate is essential for producing high-quality sparkling wine, with consistent acidity and freshness. Reims, as a historic Champagne hub, boasts extensive underground chalk cellars ideal for aging wines.
The terroir of Veuve Clicquot’s vineyards spans primarily Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, covering chalky soils that retain moisture and reflect sunlight for optimal grape ripening. The vineyards are predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, which forms the backbone of the house’s signature blends, alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, all contributing to their complexity and balance.
